5 Southern Utah Traditions That Mean Summer Is Almost Over
It happens every year in Southern Utah.
One minute we’re complaining about 110-degree afternoons, and the next we’re talking about football, Peach Days, rodeos and whether it’s finally cool enough to sit outside after work.
Summer isn’t over yet — not even close — but late August marks the beginning of a pretty great stretch of the Southern Utah calendar.
Here are five signs that we’re almost there.
1. Hurricane Peach Days Is Coming
Few events say “Southern Utah” quite like Peach Days.
The annual Hurricane tradition returns in early September with the parade, food, entertainment, activities and, of course, peaches.
For longtime locals, Peach Days is one of those events that seems to mark the unofficial transition from summer into fall.
2. Friday Nights Start Feeling Like Football Again
High school football is back, college football is arriving, and suddenly Friday and Saturday nights have a purpose again.
Whether you’re following your local high school, Utah Tech or your favorite college team, late August means football season has returned.
And yes, it’s still perfectly acceptable to watch football inside with the air conditioner running.
3. The Dixie Roundup Rodeo Isn’t Far Away
Another longtime St. George tradition arrives in September.
The Dixie Roundup Rodeo is scheduled for September 17–19 in 2026, continuing a Southern Utah tradition that dates back generations. (435 Locals)
Even if you don’t go every year, there’s something about seeing the rodeo banners around town that tells you fall is getting closer.
4. We Start Thinking About Being Outside Again
During July, the Southern Utah outdoor schedule is pretty simple:
Early morning or forget about it.
By late August, however, we start looking ahead.
Golf gets better. Evening walks get better. Hiking gets better. Backyard barbecues get better.
We aren’t completely out of the heat yet, but we’re getting closer to the time of year that reminds us why people love living here.
5. The Biggest Southern Utah Events Are Right Around the Corner
Once September arrives, things start moving quickly.
Peach Days. The Dixie Roundup Rodeo. Then October brings the St. George Marathon and the Huntsman World Senior Games. (STG Newsletter)
Before you know it, we’ll be talking about Halloween, fall colors and those first mornings when you walk outside and think:
“Wait…is it actually chilly?”
The Best Part of the Year Is Coming
Southern Utah summers can feel endless, especially during the hottest weeks of July and August.
But late August gives us the first hint that change is coming.
The events return. Football returns. Evenings slowly become more enjoyable. And eventually, that first genuinely cool morning arrives.
